Making your podcast

You have to ways to make your podcast recording:
  • Telephone interview using Skye
  • Face to face using the office Digital Voice Recorder

Telephone interview
Setup

  • Print out two copies of your interview guide
  • Give the guide to your buddy and write down their direct line number
  • Get the login details you'll from Bethan (needed for the next step)
  • Go to Dan B’s computer (Dan is now sitting downstairs next to Andrew)
  • Login using the details Bethan gave you ( not you're own)
  • Put on the headphones and adjust the microphone position
  • Open Skype (icon on the desktop)
  • Add your contact numbers using ‘add contact’
  • Use the full STD code e.g. 02074782172

Practice
  • Select Tools > Make conference calls
  • Add the direct line number of your buddy and click start
  • When you buddy answers, the application ‘Pamela’ will automatically record the call
  • Talk to each other, and practice your introduction
  • Finish the call by clicking the red ‘end call’ button
  • Switch to the Pamela application by clicking the tool bar at the bottom of the screen
  • You should see your recording listed in ‘Skype recordings’
  • Press the green play icon at the bottom of the window to check your recording
  • If everything has worked, now do the interview
  • If you are confused, or something does not work, make a note of the problem and email game.master@cyber-chase.co.uk

Interview
  • Select Tools > Make conference calls
  • Add the direct line numbers of your buddy and interviewee(s)
  • Click 'start'
  • The call should be automatically recorded, you will get an audio reminder
  • At the end of the call you will need to take a copy of the audio file
  • Your file is in the folder ‘Callrecord’ on the desktop
  • Make a backup of this file
  • Remove your contact numbers from the Skype application

Edit
  • Do not spend too much time editing. Just delete the bits you don’t want.
  • Open the application ‘Audacity’: Start > Programs > Audacity
  • Open your recording: File > Open
  • Use the space bar to play the audio
  • Use the mouse to position the play head, and to highlight a piece of audio
  • Use the DEL or backspace key to delete
  • Once you have finished editing save the project: File > Save Project
  • Export the edited file as an MP3: File > Export mp3
  • (Give the file a new name, do not overwrite the original)
  • Make a word document named with the a title of your podcast which contains a short description of your podcast and your Cyberchase identities.
  • Put all your files (original, audacity file and edited) on a CD
  • Give Bethan the CD containing your mp3 file and word document
  • Email game.master@cyber-chase.co.uk, cc'ing Bethan Williams

Digital Voice Recorder


  • Print out two copies of your interview guide
  • Get the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder WS-300M
  • Make sure it is charged up and has sufficient space for your recording

Practice
  • Make a short recording of your opening
  • Transfer this file to your computer and check it (via the built-in USB)

Interview
  • Record the interview with the machine.
  • Make sure you take a spare battery.
  • When you have finished transfer this file to your computer
  • Make a backup of the file and delete from the recorder.

Edit
  • Go to Dan B’s computer (Dan is now sitting downstairs next to Andrew)
  • Follow the instruction above for the Skype interview.
